Cortège Creative Process

Illustration · Papercut · Handmade · Art

During the pandemic in March of 2020, I began paper cutting, allowing myself to explore with total freedom of expression themes such as rebellion, resistance, life, death, illness, maternity and transformation. A year later, I atended the artist residence program Ensayar el Ensayo (rehear the essay) at La CALA where I began extensive research of art brut, carnival, trans sexuality, costumes and masquerade, I then began structuring the work around the idea of a funeral procession. A cortège.

The creation of these pieces merged minutious research with an intuitive playful paper cutting process. Each piece is a microcosm: a particular mix of ancient mythologies, symbols from collective memory and an abundance of contemporary musical, literary and cinematic references. https://karishmachugani.com/?post_type=portfolio&p=2762&preview=true

“The Law of the Fish”, for example, weaces together the Biblical story of Jonah and the Whale, with the Hindu myth of Matsya and the creation of man, adding in nuances from the film Big Fish, and adorning with in literary threads from Pinocchio and Moby Dick.
